Something I've been thinking about a lot over the last year is: Why am I doing what I'm doing? I think it's good to have a clear why and I have long had my overall career goal as: spreading the joy of food and inspiring others to grow. Which I hope you can see that I built my business around. But why have I set that goal and what are the overall values behind it?That is what I intend to dig into here today.
My main overall goal is to feel good about myself. To get clarity in what that means and how it applies to me, I will break it down. For me, the idea of feeling good is mainly about the enjoyment. And for me that is when I feel a sense of joy, gratitude and security. I have taken ownership of making sure I do what I can to make my life as enjoyable as possible, on as many levels I can.
To be able to do that, I've identified what I like and what I don't like. For example, I like to have it tidy, but hate to clean. Now you have to clean to keep it tidy. That makes me try to make it easier to keep it tidy and reduce cleaning, by having less things and living in a smaller place. That allows me to enjoy life more. I love to have a garden and to get vegetables from there, but I am less fond of clearing weeds all the time ... So I have simply accepted that it is not a perfect garden and a little weed here and there can enrich the flora. And I will make sure to enjoy everything it gives me anyway. It is all about calculating the cost and effectiveness of an action in time, energy and money. Is it worth spending a lot of time and energy clearing weeds all the time to get a perfect garden? I say no, so then I instead changed my attitude about what I see as a perfect garden for me.
Because it's a lot about seeing what you can and cannot do.I have often used the phrase: If you have something you do not like change it, if you can't change it change your attitude towards it. That along with the Serenity Prayer:
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,and wisdom to know the difference."
It is the essence of what makes me feel good and to leave what I can not influence to God is my way to be able to accept it. However, it is about more than an attitude, it is an active job to shape life into being as enjoyable as possible.
Think about how you can increase what makes you feel good and at the same time reduce what you do not like. You can't do everything at once, you need to take one step at a time. Find a strategy that works for you. For me, it has been writing a bullet journal and having a different focus for each month, as well as setting overall year and half year goals. I also decorate my bullet journal with stickers and colours to always get happy when I open it.
But what does this have to do with food? We all have to eat and if I want to feel good and enjoy everything I do, I also need to enjoy what I eat.
Therefore, I have the motto: only eat what you enjoy and enjoy all you eat.
And that is my why, behind the why.
